I recently ventured out to Arthur Avenue, an authentic enclave that encapsulates the true essence of Little Italy. The neighborhood's old-world charm and vibrant food scene are enchanting, to say the least. I'm obsessed with what I discovered and would love to share my experience with you.
Arthur Avenue in the Bronx proudly holds the title of the "Real Little Italy" of New York City, offering a true taste of Italian culture. Since my first visit, I've been drawn back many times, enthusiastically sharing this gastronomic experience with anyone showing an inkling of interest. Visitors, like myself, easily fall in love with Arthur Avenue. It's a food lover's paradise where rich flavors, vivid colors, and welcoming hospitality create an unforgettable sensory experience.
The origins of Arthur Avenue trace back to the late 19th century when Italian immigrants settled here. Despite the passage of time, Italian families continue to thrive, with businesses now run by the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the Italian immigrants who originally founded them. It's much like Manhattan's Little Italy but far less touristy.
Arthur Avenu stretches along East 187th Street, intersecting with Arthur Avenue. This vibrant hub of Italian culture and cuisine is centered around the blocks between Arthur Avenue and Hughes Avenue, making it easy to explore on foot. You'll know you're in the right place when you catch the scent of espresso brewing, along with cigar smoke wafting through the air, and the chatter of Italian conversations in the quaint coffee shops that line the street. I suggest you take a moment, sit for a while, and take it all in. Come hungry and ready to eat and shop.
Absolute-Must-Stop-Shops:
Arthur Avenue Retail Market:Step into this bustling indoor market and you’re immediately greeted by the unique sight of men hand-rolling cigars, a captivating ritual that will transports you to another era. From there, the market unfolds into a feast for the senses, with an incredible selection of cheeses, homemade sauces, Italian dry goods, beautiful fresh produce, and more. In the center is an indoor courtyard where you can sit, sip an espresso or beer, and soak in the lively atmosphere—perfect for pausing and taking it all in.
Stop in at Mike's Deli: https://www.arthuravenue.com/ which can be found in the far corner of the market. This is one of the beloved Arthur Avenue icons, known for its delectable Italian sandwiches, fresh mozzarella, and a selection of Italian cured meats that will satisfy any food enthusiast.
Borgatti's Ravioli & Egg Noodles: https://borgattis.com/ is an absolute must. This is a family-owned pasta shop, established in 1935, renowned for its handmade ravioli and wide selection of pasta varieties and sauces. I love watching them feed sheets of pasta through a pasta maker right in front of you, then packaging it up for you to take home. It doesn't get any fresher than this.
Casa Della Mozzarella, is probably my favorite. This award-winning deli is the newcomer on the block. Known for its handmade mozzarella, this tiny shop focuses on quality and won the prestigious James Beard Award. Some of the local restaurants use ingredients from here. You might find a queue running out the door, but let me assure you, every part of this experience is worth the wait.
Teitel Brothers: https://www.teitelbros.com is a unique establishment offering high-quality produce, combining Italian and Jewish influences. This shop has a fascinating history. In 1915, seeing an opportunity, the Teitel family opened their doors to sell Italian salami and olive oil to the local community. More than a century later, you can buy high-quality olive oil by the gallon and beautiful big and juicy fresh olives among many other essentials. The store is cramped but worth a browse.
Since the 1930s, Biancardi’s, a family-owned butcher shop, offers a throwback experience. Their attentive staff meticulously cuts and prepares beef, pork, sausage, and poultry to order. Don’t miss out on their speciality meats – just a counter away, you'll find tripe, brains, and sweetbreads.
If you need to stop for a bite to eat and trust me, you will, there are so many great options, that it's difficult to know where to go. Here are a few I have tried and can recommend.
Zero Otto Nove: https://zeroottonove.com I've had a lot of pizza, and I honestly believe that Zero Otto Nove serves some of the best I've had in New York. Their pizzas have a perfectly baked thin crust with high-quality mozzarella, which comes from Casa Della Mozzarella, mentioned above. The appearance is deceptive, but the restaurant is evocative of somewhere in Italy, so you know you are experiencing the real deal. Despite visiting on a quiet weekday for lunch, it was packed.
Mario's Restaurant: https://mariosarthurave.org Celebrating 104 years, This family-owned institution since 1919 is known for its classic Italian-American dishes, including their famous lasagna and delectable cannoli.
Dominick's Restaurant: This is like dining in your grandmother's home. They are a no-menu eatery where the chef prepares meals based on your preferences, delivering a homely Italian dining experience.
Roberto's Trattoria: https://robertosbronx.com I personally love Roberto's for a more upscale Italian dining experience. They offer a range of Northern and Southern Italian dishes; try the homemade pasta dishes for a truly authentic Italian taste.
Sweet Indulgences:
Madonia Bakery: https://www.madoniabakery.com A cabinet filled with fresh Italian pastries, including cannolis, is an absolute must to stock up on take-home treats. Serving up delicious bread, biscotti, and pastries for over a century. There are so many good things to eat, especially cannolis that are freshly filled. This one-hundred-year-old bakery was started in 1918 by a Sicilian immigrant who moved to the neighborhood. It was passed down throughout the generations until one of the family members brought in an external partner who knew the bakery business. People swear by the bread and the rainbow cookies here, but I’d recommend getting the cannoli.
Addeo Bakers: https://addeobakers.com/ Famous for its Italian cookies, pastries, and cakes, it's a perfect stop for rainbow cookies, cannoli, or tiramisu for a sweet ending to your meal.
Artuso Pastry Shop: https://artusopastry.com/ Known for its incredible selection of traditional Italian pastries, Artuso Pastry Shop is a must-visit. Their ricotta cheesecake and tiramisu are heavenly.
After all my exploring, I feel I have only scratched the surface. I suggest you head out and experience it for yourself. I can guarantee that you will be transported to another place and time. Arthur Avenue, The Bronx, or the "Real Little Italy" is a haven where Italian heritage thrives, welcoming all who seek an authentic and enriching experience in the heart of New York City.
Tip: Bring some cash with you—some stores won’t take online payments if it's under $10.
